Trump: Dems are ‘phony hypocrites’ for anger over Comey firing

President Trump on Wednesday blasted the Democrats for criticizing his firing of FBI Director James Comey, accusing them of hypocrisy.

“Dems have been complaining for months & months about Dir. Comey,” Trump wrote in a tweet. “Now that he has been fired they PRETEND to be aggrieved. Phony hypocrites!”

{mosads}The White House has been harshly criticized for ousting the FBI director on Tuesday, with Democrats voicing concern about the timing of the decision.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday pushed back on the criticism, claiming that the administration has been considering the move since Trump was elected in November.

“The president … had lost confidence in Director Comey,” Sanders told reporters. “He’d been considering letting Director Comey go since they day he was elected.”

Trump accused Comey of going easy on his presidential rival Hillary Clinton at times during the election and since becoming president, but he also praised Comey’s decision to revisit the investigation into Clinton’s emails in October.

Many Democrats also harshly criticized Comey at the time, questioning whether the move could potentially have a negative impact on the outcome of the election.
