Cantor denies interest in knocking off Boehner

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) denied that he’s eyeing the job held by House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), vowing to work to make Boehner Speaker.

“We are working hard to make John Boehner speaker of the House and I’m looking forward to making sure we’re out there taking our message to the people,” Cantor said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Thursday morning when asked about his leadership role within the GOP.

Cantor has been talked about by many as a potential leader of the Republican Party in the House or beyond. Along with House Budget Committee Ranking Member Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.), the two are thought to aspire to weightier roles within the GOP conference.

“Absolutely not,” Cantor responded when asked if he was going to “push John Boehner off a cliff.”

“You know, we are working together as a great team and, obviously, things are looking very optimistic for us,” Cantor said. “I’m saying that we’re working together as a team, arm in arm.”

Cantor managed to succeed one senior Republican lawmaker this Congress, taking over for then-Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), who is retiring to run for Senate.
