Twitter staff to donate $1.6M to ACLU after Trump immigration order

Twitter employees and executives will donate $1.59 million to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in response to President Trump’s executive order on immigration.

Workers at the tech company raised $530,000, according to a report by BuzzFeed, which was matched by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and executive chairman Omid Kordestani for the seven-digit total.

“The Executive Order’s humanitarian and economic impact is real and upsetting,” Dorsey tweeted on Saturday. “We benefit from what refugees and immigrants bring to the U.S.”

{mosads}Trump signed an executive order Friday imposing a ban on travelers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Sudan and Yemen for at least 90 days. The measure also halted general refugee admissions into the U.S. for 120 days and paused Syrian refugee resettlement indefinitely.

Twitter’s donation follows other tech companies that have taken a stand against the president’s immigration actions this week.

Lyft announced it would donate $1 million to the ACLU over the next four years.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said he plans to consider legal action against Trump’s order.

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos also said he would explore “legislative options” to oppose the ban, and would submit a declaration in support of Washington state’s attorney general, who is filing a lawsuit to stop Trump’s order.
