Petition urging Trump to release tax returns gets 100,000 signatures

A WhiteHouse.gov petition urging President Donald Trump to release his tax returns has reached the 100,000 signatures it needs to warrant a response from the administration.

The petition was created on Friday, shortly after Trump took the Oath of Office and the Executive Branch’s main website was transferred into the hands of his administration.

It pushes the White House to “immediately release Donald Trump’s full tax returns, with all information needed to verify emoluments clause compliance.”

It wasn’t yet clear when or how the Trump administration would respond to the petition. Trump broke decades of precedent during the 2016 presidential election by repeatedly refusing to release his personal tax returns, arguing that he would not do so because he was under audit by the IRS.

At a news conference last week, Trump reiterated that he would not release his tax returns, claiming that “the only ones that care about my tax returns are the reporters.”

The White House is required to respond to petitions that receive at least 100,000 signatures in 30 days, though that doesn’t necessarily mean that the administration has to comply with the petition’s demands.
