Weiner: Maloney told me she’s running

If you need any confirmation that Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) is set to challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) in a primary, here it is.

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) says Maloney told him so personally, and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and Rep. Steve Israel, who backed off a Gillibrand challenge, say they’ve been told as well.

She is expected to make things official by July 4, according to the Daily News:

Manhattan Rep. Carolyn Maloney is thumbing her nose at the Democratic establishment, telling fellow pols she’ll take on Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand at the polls next year.

The upper East Side Dem would be running head-long into an organized party effort – captained behind the scenes by Sen. Chuck Schumer – to clear the primary field for Gillibrand.

Maloney is expected to make an official decision about her candidacy by July 4, but she’s already alerting colleagues that she’ll challenge Gov. Paterson’s pick to replace Hillary Clinton.

“She’s told me that she’s running,” Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn/Queens) said. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and Long Island Rep. Steve Israel also say they’ve been told.
