Axelrod: Obama could meet with Trump Thursday
President Obama could meet with Donald Trump on Thursday if the Republican nominee wins the presidential election, according to David Axelrod.
“My guess is that they will meet on Thursday because that is the obligation of the outgoing president, to try and effect a transition to the next administration,” the former top Obama adviser said on CNN, Politico reported.
{mosads}“We’ve done it for several — for a couple of centuries. I’m sure he’ll feel a responsibility to do it.”
White House officials repeatedly stressed it is committed to a smooth transition no matter who wins the election, even as Obama campaigned hard for Hillary Clinton and repeatedly criticized Trump.
Administration officials have periodically met with representatives from both campaigns’ transition teams during the course of the race.
Obama has a limited time window for a meeting with the president-elect. He’s set to leave on a week-long foreign trip next Monday.
Axelrod was spotted at the White House earlier on Election Day.
