Clinton camp wants ex-prosecutors to slam Comey: report

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign disseminated a letter Sunday to former prosectors, hoping they will sign on to the missive critical of FBI Director James Comey’s latest actions, according to a report in The Daily Beast.

{mosads}“It is out of our respect for such settled tenets of the United States Department of Justice that we are moved to express our concern with the recent letter issued by FBI Director James Comey to eight Congressional Committees,” the letter obtained by the news outlet reads.

Comey sent a letter to lawmakers Friday alerting them that recently discovered emails may be relevant to the investigation into Clinton’s private server. The emails were found during an unrelated investigation into former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

Democrats are pushing Comey to release more information about the emails, while the letter appears to be the start of Clinton campaign attacks on the FBI director.

“Director Comey’s letter is inconsistent with the prevailing Department policy, and it breaks with longstanding practices followed by officials of both parties during past elections,” the letter said.

The Clinton campaign has called for full transparency from the FBI regarding the emails described in the original Comey letter, which came less than two weeks from Election Day.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch reportedly advised that the FBI not send the letter to Congress, citing the Justice Department’s historic practice of not taking investigative steps that could affect an election.

Elkan Abramowitz, who previously worked in the criminal division of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, signed onto the letter and sent it to The Daily Beast.

“It’s really bad. Bad for the FBI as well, it makes them look like they’re tilting politically. He’s not all that political a guy. He may be a Republican, but he’s not a partisan,” Abramowitz told the Daily Beast.

The letter and a list of signatories is expected to be released Sunday evening.
