Law enforcement eyeing warrant in Clinton email case: reports

Attorneys representing top Clinton aide Huma Abedin are in the midst of discussions with federal authorities regarding recently discovered emails that may be pertinent to the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private server.

Law enforcement officials may be seeking a search warrant to comb through the recently discovered messages that relate to the Democratic presidential nominee’s time as secretary of State, CNN reported Sunday.

{mosads}According to a report in USA Today, authorities are seeking permission to comb through emails found on a laptop that belonged to Abedin and her husband, former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.).

CNN earlier in the day similarly reported that officials were in discussions with lawyers representing Abedin to examine the emails, though a reporter later tweeted that while government lawyers plan to seek a search warrant, there had not been conversations with her lawyers regarding such action.

But USA Today reported that discussions are underway to secure approval for the review of the laptop, though it did not mention a search warrant specifically. 

Comey sent a letter to lawmakers Friday alerting them of the discovery of emails potentially related to the Clinton server.

The emails were found during a separate FBI investigation into Weiner for allegedly exchanging sexual messages online with teenager (D-NY). Weiner was married to Abedin, a longtime Clinton aide, though the two have since separated.
