Clinton: Trump ‘would probably call’ George Washington ‘a loser’
Hillary Clinton on Wednesday said Donald Trump would likely call George Washington “a loser” for voluntarily stepping down after two terms as the Democratic presidential nominee continues to condemn Trump’s rhetoric about a “rigged” election.
{mosads}At a rally in Lake Worth, Fla., Clinton praised the country’s first president for his refusal to be king and instead step down after serving two terms, calling that decision “one of the most important decisions in our history.”
“George Washington was wise enough to say, ‘No, I’m going home, we need to have the peaceful transfer of power,’ ” Clinton said. “One person can’t act like they’re in charge of everything in America; that’s not who we are.
“I so admire George Washington for many things, but for that decision, it was one of the most important decisions in our history.
“Now I’m sure Donald Trump would probably call him a loser because he voluntarily gave up power so that we could have elections that would choose our leaders.”
For weeks, Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has warned of a “rigged election” and encouraged voters to monitor polling places to prevent potential widespread voter fraud.
The real estate mogul made headlines for saying at the final presidential debate of 2016 that he will keep the country “in suspense” about whether he’ll accept the election’s outcome. Clinton and critics have seized on that comment, arguing it threatens democracy and the country’s electoral process.
