Kaine says if elected VP, he would serve in Senate until replacement named

Tim Kaine said Sunday that he would continue serving as a Virginia senator, even if Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is elected, until a replacement is named. 

{mosads}”I’m not assuming I’m going to win, but if I do, then the governor of Virginia would have to make a decision about who to appoint to replace me. And that decision isn’t necessarily automatic. And so rather than leave a gap, where Virginia would only have one senator, I would want to at least serve until there’s a replacement to be named,” the Democratic vice presidential nominee said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” 

If Kaine is elected vice president in November, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) would be responsible for naming his replacement. 

His choice would likely serve for about a year before running in a special election in 2017, and would then have to compete for a full six-year term the following year.
