Gary Johnson: Trump refusal to accept election results ‘offensive’

Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson says Donald Trump’s refusal to say if he will accept the results of the election are “offensive” to all Americans.

“Donald Trump’s refusal to say he will accept the outcome of an election is just one more straw too many,” said Johnson, a former GOP governor of New Mexico, in a statement Thursday.

{mosads}“It’s offensive to the thousands of election officials across the nation, and it’s offensive to a nation for which the integrity of elections is what sets us apart from much of the world.”

Johnson said Trump is ignoring America’s traditions.

“Peaceful transition of power, which depends entirely upon honoring the results of elections, is as fundamental to our greatness and Constitution as anything else we do in America, and Donald Trump can’t even accept that fundamental without hedging,” he continued. “Unbelievable.”

Trump, the GOP nominee, on Wednesday refused to say whether he would accept the results of the presidential election.

“I will look at it at the time,” he said during the final 2016 presidential debate, held in Las Vegas. “I’m not looking at anything now.”

Trump said he would keep Americans in “suspense” until after Election Day.

Hillary Clinton blasted Trump for the remarks.

“This is how Donald thinks, and it’s funny, but it’s also really troubling,” the Democratic presidential nominee said. “That is not the way our democracy works.”

Trump has repeatedly told supporters the election is being “rigged” by the media and election officials in Clinton’s favor.

Clinton leads Trump by about 6 points in the latest RealClearPolitics average of national polls.
