Poll: Majority says Trump doesn’t respect women
More than 60 percent of voters said Donald Trump doesn’t respect women in a new poll following the release of a 2005 recording in which Trump makes lewd comments about women.
{mosads}Sixty-three percent of likely voters said they didn’t think the GOP presidential nominee respects women, according to an NBC News/SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking poll released Monday. Fifty-five percent said same thing before the tape surfaced on Friday.
Pollsters found 36 percent of likely voters still said Trump respects women.
Among likely women voters, 64 percent said Trump didn’t respect women, 5 points higher than before the 2005 tape’s release.
The trend also held true for men. Before the tape was released, 45 percent of likely male voters said they didn’t think Trump respected women. After its release, that number increase by 10 points, to 55 percent.
In the tape, the billionaire describes how he could grope and kiss women without their consent because of his celebrity status. His comments, which he brushed off as “locker room talk,” have resulted in backlash from many Republicans. Some have rescinded their support for their party’s nominee, and others have called for Trump to drop out of the race.
Half of likely voters say they’ve heard of or have been following the coverage of the tape “a lot,” according to the new poll. Another 30 percent of likely voters say they’ve heard of or have been following “some” coverage of the tape.
Nearly 40 percent of likely voters say the tape makes them less likely to cast their ballots for the Republican nominee. The poll also found that 39 percent of likely voters think Trump should drop out of the race.
In a four-way matchup, the new poll found Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton leads Trump by 5 points, 46 to 41 percent. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson has 8 percent, and Green Party nominee Jill Stein has 3 percent.
The poll was conducted from Oct. 3 to 9 among 23,329 likely voters. The margin of error is 1 percentage point.
