Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Thursday mocked Libertarian Gary Johnson’s inability to name a foreign leader by pretending not to be able to come up one herself when asked.
{mosads}When speaking with reporters on her plane in Chicago, Clinton was asked for her favorite world leader.
“Oh, let me think,” Clinton said sarcastically with a laugh.
“I like a lot of the world leaders,” she added. “One of my favorites is Angela Merkel, because I think she’s been an extraordinary, strong leader during difficult times in Europe, which has obvious implications for the rest of the world, most particularly our country.”
Clinton added that she’s been impressed by Merkel’s handling of the European Union and refugee crises there.
Johnson was asked a similar question in an interview on MSNBC Wednesday night. He struggled to name a single foreign leader but offered the “former president of Mexico” before his running mate named Vicente Fox for him.
On Thursday, Johnson doubled down on the gaffe, saying a full day later, “I still can’t come up with a foreign leader I look up to.”
It’s not the first time foreign affairs have embarrassed the former New Mexico governor. Earlier this month, Johnson was asked on MSNBC to weigh in on the situation in Syria, in particular the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Aleppo.
“And what is Aleppo?” he replied.
