Poll: Clinton, Trump in tight race nationally

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton are within 1 point of each other nationally, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday.

{mosads}Clinton is favored by 44 percent of likely voters nationally, and Trump is backed by 43 percent.

Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson has the support of 8 percent of likely voters, and Green Party nominee Jill Stein is backed by 2 percent.

In a survey conducted earlier this month, Clinton had a 2-point lead over her Republican rival, 41 percent to 39 percent.

In a head-to-head matchup, Clinton still maintains a 1-point lead over Trump, 47 percent to 46 percent.

The poll also finds that 41 percent of voters think Clinton will win Monday night’s presidential debate, and 32 percent say Trump will win.

More than 80 percent of voters say they plan to watch the debate, and 55 percent say they are “more motivated than usual” to vote in the general election.

According to the new poll, Clinton leads among women, 47 percent to 42 percent, and Trump leads among men, 44 percent to 40 percent.

Trump also has an advantage among white voters, 50 percent to 36 percent, and Clinton leads among nonwhite voters, 66 percent to 24 percent.

The poll was conducted from Sept. 22 to 25 among 1,115 likely voters. The margin of error is 2.9 percentage points.

According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls, Clinton has a 2.1-point lead over her Republican rival in a head-to-head matchup, 45.9 percent to 43.8 percent.
