Poll: Clinton up 7 points on Trump in Virginia

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has closed some of the gap in Virginia, but Hillary Clinton still leads the state by seven points, a new poll finds.

{mosads}Clinton has 44 percent support in Virginia to Trump’s 37 percent, according to a Roanoke College poll released Thursday. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson has 8 percent and Green Party nominee Jill Stein has 1 percent.

In a head-to-head matchup without third-party candidates, Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, leads by 11 points, 51 percent to 40 percent.

In last month’s version of the same poll, Clinton led the head-to-head matchup by 16 points.

Clinton holds a lead among ideological moderates, 45 percent to 29 percent — but her lead among this group has declined since an August poll.

Sixty-four percent of likely voters say they are very interested in the campaign, and 90 percent say they care a good deal about who wins the presidency, the poll found.

The poll was conducted from Sept. 11 to 20 among 841 likely Virginia voters. The margin of error is 3.4 percentage points.

Clinton leads Virginia by about 5 points, according to a RealClearPolitics average of polls.
