Poll: Trump, Gary Johnson tied among military voters

Donald Trump and Gary Johnson are in a dead heat among U.S. military personnel, with Hillary Clinton a distant third, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

Trump has 38 percent support and Johnson, the Libertarian presidential nominee, has 37 percent, The Military Times/Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families survey found.

{mosads}Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton came in a distant third, registering at 16 percent.

The poll found Clinton and Trump receiving largely negative reactions from America’s armed forces.

Eighty-five percent voiced dissatisfaction with Clinton, while 66 percent said the same of Trump.

Eighty-seven percent described Clinton’s honesty and trustworthiness as poor, while only 18 percent believe her handling of national security is “good” or “very good.”

Sixty-eight percent, meanwhile, view Trump’s temperament poorly, and only 27 percent think his grasp of national security is “good” or “very good.”

The Military Times/Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families conducted its poll of 2,207 active duty troops via online interviews from Sept. 8-15. It has a 2 percent margin of error.

Johnson has frequently insisted Clinton and Trump’s unpopularity opens a road to the White House for his campaign.

The Libertarian presidential nominee has struggled for traction with voters, however, earning about 9 percent nationwide in a RealClearPolitics average of polls. He failed to make the cut for the first presidential debate, which required he reach an average of 15 percent support in national polls.
