Thune, Schumer donate $2M each to Senate efforts

Two well-known senators are donating millions of their campaign cash in hopes of helping their parties succeed in November. 

{mosads}Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) donated $2 million of his campaign funds to the Republican effort to keep control of the Senate. And Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) donated the same amount to Democrats, The Washington Post reports. 

Thune’s funds will go from his reelection committee to the National Republican Senatorial Committee to be spent on campaign ads and other efforts, according to the Post. 

“The stakes are high. I think the Senate is the last kind of check and balance,” Thune told the Post. 

“And, you know, I think we have to be prepared for however the presidential race goes and the Supreme Court’s hanging in the balance.”

Schumer’s donation was announced at the Democratic luncheon in the capitol by Sen. Jon Tester (Mont.), chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Committee, according to the Post. 

Schumer will likely become the next Democratic leader in the Senate following the retirement of Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.)
