California Republican endorses Democrat’s Senate bid
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is crossing the aisle to throw his support behind Rep. Loretta Sanchez’s (D-Calif.) Senate bid, according to the Los Angeles Times.
{mosads}Sanchez is competing against California Attorney General Kamala Harris (D) in race that features no major Republicans. California is one of two states with a “top-two primary” system, meaning the top two candidates advance to the general election, regardless of party.
“I’ve already long ago figured out that Loretta Sanchez, her work on national security, probably tips the scale for a lot of us,” Issa said after the two appeared together at a military base in San Diego.
“She’s also very well aware of our problems with water. So those are, in my particular case, making a difference that is pretty measurable.”
Issa and Sanchez appeared together this week in a congressional delegation touring military bases in Issa’s district.
“What most people don’t understand, because they see politics and Republicans and Democrats fighting all the time, the reality is that we need to do our work in the Congress,” Sanchez said at the event. “And to do that you have to work with both sides of the aisle, and that’s what we do, especially on the military committee.”
