Poll: Feingold up double-digits on Johnson in Wis. Senate race
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) is trailing his Democratic opponent Russ Feingold by 13 points, a new poll finds.
{mosads}Feingold has 54 percent to Johnson’s 41 percent, according to a new Monmouth University poll released Wednesday. Libertarian candidate Phil Anderson garnered two percent, while three percent were undecided.
Both Johnson and Feingold have positive favorability ratings, but the former Democratic senator is more well-known. Feingold served in the Senate from 1993 to 2011, before he was unseated by Johnson.
The poll also found Democrats were more unified than Republicans in Wisconsin. Fifteen percent of Donald Trump backers are breaking with the GOP to support Feingold, while only six percent of Hillary Clinton voters are crossing over to support Johnson.
“It looks like Feingold could get a bit of redemption for that stinging loss in 2010,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.
The poll was conducted from Aug. 27 to 30 and surveyed 404 likely voters in Wisconsin. The margin of error was 4.9 percentage points.
The Wisconsin Senate race will likely be pivotal in determining which party controls the upper chamber next year. Democrats need to flip five seats — or four if they keep control of the White House — to gain control of the Senate.
Wisconsin was won by President Obama in both 2008 and 2012.
Feingold has consistently led in every poll of the cycle listed on RealClearPolitics polling averages.
