Huffington Post to launch Mexican edition early over Trump

The Huffington Post is speeding up the debut of its Mexican edition, in part due to Donald Trump.

Huffpost Mexico will launch on Sept. 1 after initially targeting a 2017 debut, according to Politico.

{mosads}“Donald Trump has become even more destructive with his attacks on this judge,” said Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post. “And of course this comes on top of his other attacks on Mexicans, running on the platform that he will put up a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, and wanting to deport 11 million immigrants, many of whom are from Mexico.”

“We normally like to give ourselves more time, but the reason we expedited the process is because of the U.S. election, and because of how critical Mexico is becoming in this election,” she said.

Politico on Tuesday reported Huffpost Mexico will be based in Mexico City after hiring about 15 multimedia reporters and editors.

Huffington said a major early focus of the publication would be the U.S. presidential election and how it impacts Mexico.

“I think all of us, as journalists, have an incredible responsibility to stop these identity politics that stigmatizes an entire race and challenges the legitimacy of anyone of Mexican heritage. We must do our part to dispel myths and share the voices and faces of Mexican people so we can see them as human beings and not our enemies,” she said.

The Huffington Post initially covered Trump’s Oval Office bid in its entertainment section before reversing course last December.

The newspaper in January began publishing an editorial note with all of its articles on Trump labeling the billionaire a “liar,” a “racist” and a “xenophobe.”

Trump is battling widespread criticism for attacking a judge overseeing lawsuits against the businessman’s Trump University over his ethnicity.

Trump insists Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s “Mexican heritage” renders him incapable of handling the suits fairly.

Curiel was born in Indiana to Mexican immigrants. Trump argues Curiel’s heritage is a “conflict of interest” because of his border and immigration policies.
