Miss. governor to join lawsuit against Obama transgender policy

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) said Thursday his office plans to join 11 other state officials in suing the Obama administration over the president’s transgender bathroom directive, Reuters reports.

{mosads}The lawsuit filed Wednesday in a federal district court in Northern Texas goes after, among others, the departments of Justice and Education over the directive, which tells public schools they should allow transgender students to use bathrooms that match their gender identities or risk losing federal funding.

“Our office has talked to the Texas attorney general’s office and I intend, as soon as possible, to join the lawsuit against this latest example of federal overreach,” Bryant said in a statement.

The other states leading the legal challenge are: Alabama, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Utah and Georgia, along with the Arizona Department of Education, the governor of Maine and school districts in Arizona and Texas.

Louisiana and West Virginia are the only states in the lawsuit with Democratic governors.
