Tuesday: Drug abuse, energy bill
The House will turn to preventing opioid overdose Tuesday as it returns from a weeklong recess.
House lawmakers are currently scheduled to vote on 10 pieces of legislation, including a handful aimed at combating the growing prescription drug abuse epidemic.
{mosads}While the Senate passed its own opioid and heroin abuse bill earlier this year, the House is instead passing several individual bills.
One measure to be voted on Tuesday would require the administration to review the effectiveness of grant programs that target opioid abuse.
Votes in the House are expected at 6:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Senate will continue debating its energy and water appropriations bill as leadership looks for a way to break the stalemate on the bill.
No votes are currently scheduled in the Senate.
Unless lawmakers are able to get a deal, a procedural vote is expected to happen Wednesday on Sen. Tom Cotton’s (R-Ark.) amendment to prevent the government from purchasing Iran’s heavy water, which can be used to make nuclear weapons and produce nuclear energy.
Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) expressed optimism Monday that senators would be able to wrap up the spending bill this week.
