Hassan gets personal in first Senate ad

New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan (D) released her first television ad for her Senate campaign Tuesday, detailing how her son’s disability led to her getting involved in public service.

“All families have challenges, what’s really important is that they also have community,” Hassan says in the ad. “That’s one of the reasons I got involved in public service. Because it made it so clear to me how much you can accomplish when you work together.”

{mosads}Hassan, who is trying to unseat GOP Sen. Kelly Ayotte in November, discusses her son Ben’s first day of school, noting that because he was born with cerebral palsy she “had a lot of anxiety.”

“I found myself thinking, as the bus pulled out, about all the families that came before the Hassan family. Teachers and the champions for kids like Ben and families like ours who made his inclusion possible,” she adds.

The Democratic governor has repeatedly pointed to her son’s disability as a driving force behind her political perspective and decision to get involved in public service.

The ad, which is backed by a six-figure buy, will run in New Hampshire and Boston broadcast stations as well as online, according to Hassan’s campaign.

Ayotte is part of a handful of vulnerable Republican incumbents in states carried by President Obama in the last two presidential election cycles.

The outcome of the race will help determine if Democrats are able to regain control of the Senate. They’ll need to net four seats if they also keep the White House, or five seats to win back the upper chamber outright.

Hassan is currently trailing less than 4 points behind Ayotte, according to a RealClearPolitics average of polling. A WMUR poll released last month had the race virtually tied.
