Bill Richardson Puts Country First
OK, Rabbi Kushner, I’ve read the book, but I still don’t understand why bad things happen to good people … Good people like Bill Richardson.
First, I thought he’d make a great president. Then I thought he’d make a great vice president. Then I thought he’d make a great Commerce secretary. And now he won’t even get that job, because of this lousy grand-jury investigation in New Mexico.
At this point, there’s not a lot we can say about what happened, except this:
1. Unlike Rod Blagojevich, Richardson may be under investigation, but he has not yet been charged with any crime — and, in fact, may never be charged with any crime.
2. In taking himself out of consideration for Commerce secretary, Richardson did the right thing. He believes he’s innocent. He believes he could still be confirmed. But he also knows it would be messy and hang a cloud of embarrassment over the nascent Obama administration. And Richardson cares too much for Barack Obama, and for his country, to let that happen.
So, once again, Bill Richardson proves he’s a class act. No doubt, as soon as he proves his innocence, there’ll be another top job waiting for him in the Obama administration.
