NJ papers call for Christie’s resignation

Six New Jersey newspapers owned by newspaper conglomerate Gannett are calling on Chris Christie to step down as governor in a joint editorial released ahead of the polls closing on Super Tuesday. 

The papers bash Christie for his recent endorsement of GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump and cast him as having abandoned the state around his own failed presidential bid. 

{mosads}”We’re fed up with Gov. Chris Christie’s arrogance. … We’re fed up with his long neglect of the state to pursue his own selfish agenda,” the joint editorial reads. 

“We’re disgusted with his endorsement of Donald Trump after he spent months on the campaign trail trashing him, calling him unqualified by temperament and experience to be president.”

Christie ended his White House bid after a disappointing finish in New Hampshire and decided to back the real estate magnate last week. 

The papers say Christie must “do his long-neglected constituents a favor and resign as governor,” calling for a recall effort if he declines to leave office.  

The editorial blasts Christie for holding “contempt” for the media, evidenced by him refusing to answer questions about Trump and other national political issues during a Monday press conference discussing a state Supreme Court nomination.  

“It has been obvious for at least two years that Christie has put personal ambition ahead of the interests of New Jersey citizens,” the papers say.

“New Jersey needs someone whose full attention is devoted to making life better for New Jersey’s citizens. That won’t happen until Christie steps down or is forced out.”
