Christie: ‘I got carried away’

Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) said late Tuesday that he got “carried away” with remarks at a New Hampshire event about the weekend’s blizzard.

“I take heat for what I say all the time and sometimes it’s deserved, sometimes it isn’t,” he said during a news conference in Trenton, N.J., according to NBC News.

{mosads}“I got carried away at a town hall meeting last night and it is not the first that I’ve gotten carried away and said something that I later apologized for. It doesn’t happen often, but it does.”

Christie said he especially regrets calling a Jersey Shore mayor “crazy” for comparing the blizzard with 2012’s Hurricane Sandy.

He then apologized Tuesday for publicly dismissing North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello (R) the evening before.

“I had a night to sleep on it, woke up this morning and didn’t feel good about what I said about him,” the GOP presidential candidate said.

“The reason for my apology is that I felt really badly about it,” Christie added. “The fact is that he was very gracious in accepting it.”

Christie on Monday rebuked a New Hampshire town hall attendee for suggesting he should leave the campaign trail for his home state.

“I don’t know what you expect me to do,” he said. “Do you want me to go down there with a mop?

“For your friends and family who are concerned about why I’m not there, I just wonder what it is they think I’d be doing today,” Christie continued. “I’m the governor. I’m not the chief engineer. I run a government of 60,000 people [and] they know exactly what they need to do.”

Christie has repeatedly taken fire for leaving to campaign for president in New Hampshire, which hosts its primary on Feb. 9.

Christie reiterated on Tuesday that the weekend storm wasn’t as devastating as Sandy, the hurricane-like storm that hit New Jersey’s coast in 2012.

“It’s not even close,” he said.
