Cher: Michigan governor ‘took advantage’ of people

Pop star Cher on Wednesday said Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) is only apologizing for the water crisis in Flint, Mich., because he got “caught.”

{mosads}“It’s too little, too late,” Cher said on MSNBC’s “Live with Tamron Hall.” “Who cares? I mean, everyone’s sorry when they get caught.”

“You know, you need to care before,” she added. “You need to care when you know that the health — that the people that you have responsibility for, that you are taking care of them. You know, you are their public servant, and you don’t get to push them around, and it’s always poor people.”

Cher said Snyder “took advantage” of the citizens of Flint, who she said have no voice to hold their elected representatives accountable.

“Also the neighborhoods, the counties, they’re mostly black and they’re all poor,” she said. “So he just took advantage of people that have no voice, you know? And it’s such a — that’s such a cheap shot. You can take advantage of people who have no voice because who’s going to hear them?”

The celebrity revealed over the weekend that she was donating more than 180,000 bottles of water to Flint amid the city’s lead-contaminated water crisis.

After no American water companies would help her bring relief to the community, she said she partnered with Icelandic Glacial Water.

“I went to American companies, and I couldn’t get the help that I needed, and I’m not used to doing — well, I am actually used to doing these kinds of things, but not in this kind of way,” she said.

The governor in his state of the state address on Tuesday officially apologized for the water crisis, saying he failed to respond to the problem adequately.

Responding to a request for aid from Snyder, President Obama declared a state of emergency in Flint, mobilizing federal agencies to provide aid to the city.

Flint switched to from a Detroit-run water system to Flint River water in April 2014 in order to save money.

Tests later revealed that corrosive river water caused lead to leach from Flint pipes, contaminating tap water in the city.

Cher previously remarked that Snyder should be put before a firing squad for his role in the incident.
