Wednesday: Short-term spending bill
Lawmakers are expected to take up a second short-term spending bill on Wednesday as they seek to avoid a government shutdown.
The continuing resolution (CR) would extend government funding through Tuesday, giving members additional time to debate and pass a larger end-of-the-year spending bill that was released after 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
{mosads}The expected floor action would mark the second time lawmakers have had to pass a short-term stopgap bill since they missed the original Dec. 11 deadline to pass the larger “omnibus” legislation.
The House will take up the CR under suspension of the rules. First votes in the House are expected between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., with final votes expected between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are expected to convene at 10 a.m. for a closed-door meeting on the omnibus bill, as well as a separate package of tax extenders.
The Senate will also likely pass the CR after it is sent over from the House, though no votes are currently scheduled in the Senate.
