Thursday: Refugees, highway funding

The House will take up legislation on Thursday to require additional security checks on Syrian refugees before they can resettle in the United States.

House lawmakers are expected to vote on a bill to require the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Intelligence Agency to certify that each Syrian and Iraqi refugee admitted to the U.S. poses no threat to the country.

{mosads}But the legislation has earned a veto threat from the White House. The Office of Management and Budget said in a statement that the legislation would create “unnecessary and impractical requirements that would unacceptably hamper our efforts to assist some of the most vulnerable people in the world, many of whom are victims of terrorism.”

Votes in the House are expected in the House between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and between 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Senate will continue its work on the fiscal year 2016 spending bill for the Departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) filed cloture on the legislation on Wednesday evening. Senators are expected to finish their work on the bill before they leave for the Thanksgiving recess.

Senators also still need to pass a two-week extension of federal infrastructure funding, which is set to expire on Friday.
