Tuesday: Sanctuary cities, deficit
The Senate will take a procedural vote Tuesday on moving to legislation that would crackdown on cities that don’t comply with federal immigration law.
The proposal from Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) would limit federal funding for so-called “sanctuary cities” and increase the amount of time undocumented immigrants could spend in prison if they reenter the United States illegally after being deported.
{mosads}Vitter will need 60 votes to overcome Tuesday’s procedural hurdle on whether or not the Senate should end debate over taking up the legislation.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is pledging that Democrats will block the bill, calling the legislation “vile” and the “Donald Trump Act.”
Trump, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, got pushback from lawmakers in both parties earlier this year when he suggested that Mexican immigrants were criminals and rapists.
Separately, the Senate is also expected to vote on Ann Donnelly to be a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of New York.
Meanwhile the House will consider a handful of bills under suspension of the rules, including a requirement that the administration include in its budget submission how much the annual deficit would cost an individual taxpayer.
Votes in the House aren’t expected until 6:30 p.m.
