Wednesday: Iran, House returns

The Senate will continue its debate of the Iran nuclear deal on Wednesday, after Democrats blocked a resolution of disapproval for the second time.

Senators voted 56-42 on moving forward with the resolution on Tuesday, with 60 votes needed to overcome the procedural hurdle.

{mosads}Instead, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is forcing Democrats to walk the line on the deal. The Kentucky Republican teed up a procedural vote for Thursday on an amendment that would block Obama from lifting sanctions under the deal until after Iran recognizes Israel and releases Americans currently held in the country.

Thursday’s procedural vote is the same day as the deadline for Congress to pass a resolution on the Iran deal.

No votes are scheduled in the Senate for Wednesday, but senators are expected to recess from 12:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. for weekly party lunches.

Meanwhile, the House will return from a long weekend at noon, with legislative business starting at 2 p.m.

House lawmakers are expected to vote on a handful of noncontroversial bills under suspension of the rules at 6 p.m.
