Fiorina: ‘I’m not saying I oppose paid maternity leave’

Carly Fiorina said on Sunday that she’s not opposed to paid maternity leave, but is opposed to the federal government mandating that every company offer paid maternity leave.

“For the government to tell others how to do things when the government hasn’t gotten its basic house in order is not only ineffective, it’s hypocritical,” she told Jack Tapper while appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

{mosads}The lone female Republican presidential candidate said Hewlett-Packard, the company she formerly ran, offered paid maternity and paternity leave.

“I’m not saying I oppose paid maternity leave,” she said. “What I’m saying is I oppose the federal government mandating paid maternity leave to every company out there.”

Fiorina said she doesn’t think it’s the role of the federal government to tell private sector companies how to manage their business.

Last week, Netflix announced it will be giving new moms and dads unlimited paid leave in the first year after the birth or adoption of a child.

Fiorina said the company is “doing the right thing because they know it helps them attract the right talent.”
