Could Indiana’s Pence run for both governor and president?

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) would be able to run for both the presidency and reelection if Indiana lawmakers pass a recently introduced bill.

{mosads}That bill would amend state law to let state officeholders to run for reelection while also running for a federal office, freeing Pence up to test the presidential waters without relinquishing his current role.

The bill is being introduced by Indiana state Sen. Mike Delph (R), a Pence ally.

“I think it’s good for the state of Indiana to have a sitting governor in the national conversation and because of that I think it’s in our interest to make the obstacles and roadblocks for Pence as minimal as possible,” Delph told the Indianapolis Star, which first reported the bill.

Pence is considering a White House run, though he’s said he won’t make a decision until after Indiana’s next legislative session wraps up in late April.

He’d start out as a dark-horse candidate because of his low name recognition nationally, though the former congressman is well-liked by conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch, and he has close ties to some influential social and fiscal conservative leaders.
