Armed Services Chairman: Bad intel from torture wasted resources

Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) said the CIA’s use of torture was a “failure both moral and practical.”

Levin, who serves as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, applauded the release of an Intelligence Committee report that showed that after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) used torture during George W. Bush’s administration.

{mosads}“The report released today by the Intelligence Committee is an important addition to the public’s knowledge,” Levin said on the Senate floor Tuesday. “Concealing the truth is never the American way.”

Levin said the report concluded that torture also failed to yield the desired results.

“Some detainees subjected to these techniques provided false fabricated information that wasted time and resources on wild goose chases,” Levin said.

He added that he hopes the release of the report will ensure America never uses these “enhanced interrogation techniques” again.
