SD election results to be delayed

South Dakota’s release of election results will be delayed at least one hour on election night.

According to The Associated Press, South Dakota Secretary of State Jason Gant announced the delay after a polling site in Shannon County opened an hour late.

{mosads}A poll worker failed to show up to the site, which will now be open an hour later than scheduled. 

South Dakota was originally scheduled to close its polls and start reporting results at 9 p.m., but now won’t do so until 10 p.m.

Republicans are hoping to gain a Senate seat in the state as Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) announced he is retiring. Mike Rounds (R) is expected to win in a three-way race against opponents Rick Weiland (D) and Larry Pressler (I). The GOP needs to flip six seats to take control of the Senate.

The Weiland campaign has also complained that the polling station was the closest to South Dakota’s largest Native American reservation — disproportionately disenfranchising typically Democratic voters.
