Romney to campaign for Pat Roberts

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is the latest member of the GOP cavalry being called in to help save Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), as he fights off a fierce challenge from independent Greg Orman.

{mosads}Romney will headline a rally for Roberts Oct. 28 at a shopping and residential complex in suburban Kansas City.

The most recent survey of the race out Monday showed the senator tied with Orman, despite the independent facing millions in outside attacks over the past few weeks.

Roberts’s unexpected weakness in his race has Democrats gleeful at the prospect that they could, at the very least, bring him home to campaign and perhaps add another senator to their ranks, as they seek to hold onto a fragile six-seat majority. Orman has not yet indicated which party he would caucus with, though Democrats are confident because of his past support for Democratic candidates and more progressive positions on some social issues he’ll be squarely in their camp.

But the prospect of control of the Senate hinging on Kansas has Republicans scrambling to save Roberts.

He’s seen enthusiastic campaign support from a pantheon of Republican stars spanning the ideological spectrum, ranging from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
