Government asks for Guantanamo tapes to be withheld
The Department of Justice is asking a judge to stop the release of videos that show the restraint and force-feeding of a prisoner being held at the detention facility in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, according to The Associated Press.
{mosads}In its filing, the government says it could appeal an order by federal judge Gladys Kessler that the tapes be released to the public.
Kessler presided over a hearing regarding the way Syrian prisoner Abu Wa’el Dhiab has been treated at the facility. His lawyers assert that removal from his cell, restraint and force-feeding is abusive.
Kessler set a Friday deadline for redacting sensitive information from the tapes. The government said in its filing that that timeline makes an appeal impossible.
