OFA gets behind Google’s withdrawal from ALEC

Organizing for Action (OFA) is getting behind tech companies’ dismissal of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) over its stance on climate change.

The OFA, the offshoot of President Obama’s 2012 campaign, commended Google on Wednesday for severing ties with the group in an email pitch, which asked supporters sign their name to a petition calling for the Environmental Protection Agency to adopt Obama’s clean power plan.

{mosads}”Climate change deniers like ALEC are exactly the reason why this EPA comment collection period is so important,” the OFA said, adding that action like Google’s happens “when ordinary Americans raise their voices.”

The OFA’s backing of Google’s move is unsurprising; it has been a strong advocate for action on climate change since its inception.

Technology companies have been under increasing pressure to cut ties with the conservative group, which advocates for pro-business policies at the state level. While environmental groups have branded ALEC a climate denier, ALEC says the charge is based on misinformation.

In a letter Tuesday, more than 80 groups called on eBay to follow the lead of Google and other tech companies.
