Clintons ‘happy’ to be grandparents

Former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton celebrated the birth of their first grandchild on Saturday, saying in a statement they were “blessed, grateful, and so happy.”

{mosads}“We are thrilled to be with our daughter and her husband as they welcome their daughter into the world,” the Clintons said.

Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky was born Friday evening to Chelsea Clinton and her husband Marc Mezvinsky.

“Chelsea is well and glowing,” the Clintons said. “Marc is bursting with pride. Charlotte’s life is off to a good start.”

The Clintons both took to Twitter to express their excitement. Hillary tweeted that she and Bill were “over the moon” with happiness.

The former president was originally set to attend a fundraiser in Denver benefitting Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) on Saturday, but scrapped those plans after the birth of his granddaughter.

The arrival of the baby came just a few days too late for the Clintons to take up President Obama on his offer to borrow the presidential motorcade when Chelsea went into labor.

Speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York on Tuesday, Obama told the crowd, “I was just discussing with President Clinton that if Chelsea begins delivery while I’m speaking, she has my motorcade and will be able to navigate traffic.”
