NextGen brings $3.5K from outside donors in August

Environmental super-PAC NextGen Climate raised only $3,550 last month from donors other than founder Tom Steyer, it reported.

Steyer, a billionaire investor turned climate activist, gave $15 million of his own money to the group in August, according to disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission.

{mosads}Steyer has now contributed $26.6 million to the organization this year, by far the largest piece of NextGen’s $33.3 million raised in 2014.

The August haul was much smaller than July, when the group brought in $501,000 from donors other than Steyer.

The funding level is well short of the $100 million goal Steyer set earlier this year to donate to candidates who support environmental causes, with at least $50 million coming from his own pocket and up to another $50 million coming from outside donors.

Apart from Steyer, the August contributions came from two Florida environmentalists, a film director and a Democratic strategist, according to the FEC filings released Saturday.

So far, NextGen has spent money this election year in competitive Senate races in Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire and Michigan. It has also targeted gubernatorial races in Florida, Pennsylvania and Maine.

In all races so far, NextGen has supported the Democratic candidates.
