Cuomo survives primary challenge
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) defeated progressive-backed primary challenger Zephyr Teachout, but the close margin might still raise questions about his support in the state.
Cuomo took 60 percent to Teachout’s 36 percent, when The Associated Press called the race, with 50 percent of precincts reporting.
The incumbent was long expected to defeat Teachout, a law professor, but observers had been watching his margin of support for signs of weakness. Progressives have expressed frustration with Cuomo’s economic agenda, including tax cuts and a cap on spending increases in the state budget.
But he received endorsements from prominent Democratic figures in the state, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, and former Sen. Hillary Clinton (D), who cut a robocall for the governor and his running mate, former Rep. Kathy Hochul.
Hochul also pulled out a solid win over progressive challenger Tim Wu, 59 percent to 41 percent, despite predictions she could be the more vulnerable of the two
