Little love for Washington at Emmys
Netflix’s “House of Cards,” which stars Kevin Spacey as a sinister politician, failed to bring home one of the biggest prizes of the evening, the Emmy for Best Drama Series. The award went to “Breaking Bad” for the final season of the Bryan Cranston-starring series. Cranston also won the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, a category in which Spacey was among the contenders.

There was a bright spot, however, among the crop of D.C.-based shows for Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The “Seinfeld” vet — who was featured in an Emmys bit early on in the night in which she seemed to forget that she once kissed Cranston in a “Seinfeld” episode — took home the Best Actress in a Comedy Series award for her role in “Veep.” It was the third year that Louis-Dreyfus, who plays a sometimes-bumbling fictional vice president on the HBO show, captured the Emmy in the category. Before accepting the award, Louis-Dreyfus embraced Cranston in a passionate kiss, to laughs from the crowd.
Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) tweeted his congrats to the actress, writing:
Congratulations to @OfficialJLD on her Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy. We love having @VeepHBO in Maryland. pic.twitter.com/XKP2qVa158

“Veep,” along with “House of Cards,” are both produced in Maryland. The political satire lost out in the Best Comedy Series category to “Modern Family,” which won the award for a fifth consecutive year.
A crowded list of entertainers on politically themed shows also ruled the Best Actress in a Drama Series category, but none managed to go home with the golden statue. “The Good Wife’s” Julianna Margulies bested Robin Wright on “House of Cards,” “Homeland’s” Claire Danes and “Scandal” star Kerry Washington.
