US offers assistance to China after 6.5 quake

The United States has offered assistance to China after an earthquake in the country’s southwestern Yunnan province killed nearly 400 people on Sunday.

U.S. officials are in contact with their Chinese counterparts about the reported 6.5 magnitude quake, which killed at least 387 people and injured 1,800, according to The Wall Street Journal.

{mosads}“The United States offers sincere condolences to all those who lost loved ones in the August 3 earthquake in southwestern China,” White House National Security Council deputy spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said in a statement. 

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those that lost their lives, those injured or displaced, and all the people of China on this difficult day,” she said. “U.S. disaster response officials are in contact with their Chinese counterparts. The United States stands ready to assist.”

The earthquake caused tens of thousands of buildings in Ludian County to fall, according to the Xinhua news agency.
