DC shows rake in Emmy love

Political- and Washington-themed TV series are again finding Emmy Award favor, with hits including “Veep,” “House of Cards” and “Scandal” all raking in nominations on Thursday.

{mosads}“House of Cards,” which stars Kevin Spacey as a sinister, power-hungry politician, racked up more than a dozen nominations for Netflix. Along with a Best Drama nod, Spacey and Robin Wright, his wife on the show, were nominated in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories.
 
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won an Emmy last year for her portrayal of the fictional Vice President Selina Meyer on HBO’s “Veep,” picked up another Best Actress in a Comedy Series nomination.

The series is up for Best Comedy, and co-stars Tony Hale, who also won in 2013, and Anna Chlumsky also received nominations.
 
Claire Danes, who won Best Actress in a Drama Series for the first two seasons of Showtime’s political thriller “Homeland,” is nominated for its third as well. In addition to Wright, Danes will face off with Kerry Washington of ABC’s “Scandal.”

“Homeland” co-star Mandy Patinkin received a nomination for his supporting role as CIA director on the show.

HBO leads the networks with 99 nominations, more than twice as many as second-place CBS. On the Home Box Office, it’s power struggles in Westeros, not Washington, that reign supreme: “Game of Thrones” is TV’s most-nominated show, with 19 nods.
