Senate passes bill to add prayer to WWII Memorial

The Senate passed a bill Thursday that would ensure President Roosevelt’s D-Day prayer is added to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

{mosads}The Senate passed the bill one day before the 70th anniversary of the allied invasion of Normandy, France, also know as D-Day.

“Tomorrow we mark a momentous occasion. It’s the 70th anniversary of D-Day,” Portman said on the Senate floor. “The country came together to pray for them and give them the strength that they would need. … It’s a very powerful prayer.”

S. 1044 directs the Secretary of Interior to display Roosevelt’s prayer on the memorial on the National Mall. Roosevelt addressed the nation via radio, reading the prayer shortly before the military attack that started the downfall of Hitler’s Nazi regime.

The House passed a similar bill last year, but would need to once again before it is sent to President Obama’s desk. Portman said he hopes the House acts soon on the legislation.

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) is a co-sponsor of the legislation. The National World War II Museum is located in Louisiana.
