Senate panel to review use of military force policy

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a hearing next Wednesday to review the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq.

{mosads}That hear will occur the same day the Senate is expected to begin consideration of a controversial nominee, David Barron, who worked as legal counsel for the administration and drafted memos justifying the 2011 killing of an American citizen in Yemen with a drone. President Obama has nominated Barron to serve on the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who serves on the committee, said the hearing could help reassure some Democrats that Barron’s nomination should go forward because the authorization of force may have been used to justify the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, the American citizen targeted in Yemen.

Also on Wednesday, Federal Bureau Of Investigation director James Comey will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee at an oversight hearing.
