Alanis Morissette cuts campaign song for Calif. candidate

Musician Alanis Morissette is wading into politics to help her friend, self-help guru Marianne Williamson, in her independent bid for retiring Rep. Henry Waxman’s (D-Calif.) seat.

{mosads}Morissette has cut a campaign song for Williamson, a long-shot candidate and best-selling author.

“We’re going down, down, down. We’re going down unless we move to new ground, unless we start a revolution, awaken from this frozen, start the mending of our union today,” Morissette sings in the song.

Having a campaign song — especially one as abstract as this — is a rather unusual move for a modern campaign. But Williamson is an unusual candidate, and Waxman’s Hollywood-based district is rather unique as well.

She also has the backing of Eva Longoria, Jane Lynch and Nicole Ritchie. But California state Sen. Ted Lieu (D) and former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel (D) are considered the favorites in the race.

In Williamson’s words, here’s how the campaign song came about:

“Several weeks ago, at our Love, Enlightenment and Politics seminar, a woman in the audience asked Alanis Morissette if she would write a song for the campaign. I remember feeling a bit embarrassed, hoping Alanis wouldn’t think I’d put her up to it! But Alanis being Alanis, she simply said, ‘Sure!’ Now, true to her word, Alanis Morissette has produced a masterpiece,” she writes on her website. “I have never heard a song more powerfully describe this moment in our history, or more lovingly call forth our generation’s genius from the ashes of our pain. With her inimitable musical alchemy, Alanis has provided an anthem for our audacious quest to get America back on track.”
