EPA, Energy chiefs get first pitch at Red Sox game

Environmental Protection Agency chief Gina McCarthy gets to be with her favorite baseball team next week when she throws out the first pitch at a Boston Red Sox game.

McCarthy, who hails from Boston, will be joined by Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz at the game. Both secretaries will throw a pitch simultaneously to two different catchers.

{mosads}The two administration officials using the April 22 event to “highlight the importance of Earth Day and the work the administration’s done on climate change,” EPA spokesman Thomas Reynolds said.

Earth Day is an annual event meant to demonstrate support for environmental protection, and the EPA is partnering with the Red Sox to promote “small steps that individuals can take to mitigate climate change,” Reynolds said.

Tips with the hashtag #ActOnClimate will be displayed on the display screen at Fenway Park. The point is to help with “educational outreach on climate change initiatives,” Reynolds said.

EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe will be throwing out a first pitch of his own at the Washington Nationals game next Tuesday in honor of Earth Day.

The week’s events don’t end there for the EPA though.

On Monday, McCarthy is set to appear on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

She will talk broadly about President Obama’s climate change agenda and is preparing herself for Stewart’s characteristic zingers.

“She has been brushing up on previous Daily Show episodes and know Stewart is a funny man,” Reynolds said.
