• DEFENSE. Shockey Scofield Solutions has signed up with Academi, the latest iteration of the private security company Blackwater, to lobby on “issues related to international and domestic security training and services,” according to lobbying disclosure records. John Scofield, once communications director for the House Appropriations Committee, and Jeff Shockey, the panel’s former staff director, are lobbying for the company.
• ENERGY. Levick Strategic Communications is revving up its new lobbying practice. The firm, which brought on several members of disbanded Dow Lohnes Government Strategies, has signed up with Chevron to lobby on oil production, hydraulic fracturing, ethanol and regulations of refineries. Michael Scrivner, once chief of staff to the late Rep. Norman Lent (R-N.Y.); Rick Kessler, former chief of staff to Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.); and Peter Leon, ex-legislative director for Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) are lobbying for the oil giant. Other new clients of the firm include Calpine, Tenaska and Iroquois Gas Transmission System.
{mosads}• FINANCIAL SERVICES. Dodd-Frank keeps driving business to K Street. Fisher Investments, a Camas, Wash. investment adviser firm, has hired Thorn Run Partners to lobby on issues related to implementation of the Wall Street reform law. Jason Rosenstock, once legislative counsel to the late Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), is working for the company.
• GOVERNMENT. Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies has been hired by Fieldprint, a Marlton, N.J.-based electronic fingerprinting company, to lobby on “government contracting for fingerprinting and background checks.” Howard Schweitzer, former general counsel for the U.S. Export-Import Bank, is working the account.
• SCIENCE. Facing the threat of regulation, electronic cigarette companies are turning to lobbyists for help. The Smoke Free Alternatives Trade Association has brought on Blank Rome Government Relations to lobby on “issues relating to the regulation of vapor products.” Shimon Stein, former senior policy adviser to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.); Malloy McDaniel, ex-policy adviser to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.); and J. Michael Hogan, once deputy chief of staff to ex-Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) are just some of the lobbyists on the account.
