Pilot killed in Nevada fighter jet crash

A military pilot was killed when a Marine Corps fighter crashed in the mountains in western Nevada, the Navy said late Sunday.

The crash occurred at 3 p.m. Saturday, when a Marine Corps F/A-18C went down during a training flight in the Fallon Range Training Complex, which is roughly 70 miles east of Naval Air Station Fallon, Nev.

{mosads}Reports from the crash scene indicated the aircraft was a total loss, the Navy said in a statement.

It took Navy personnel several hours to reach the crash site Sunday, as they were delayed by a snowstorm overnight and the site was located in remote, rugged terrain in the mountains.

The F/A-18C Marine fighter was on loan to the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center at Fallon as a training jet.

The pilot’s name was being withheld until next of kin is notified.

The Navy said there were no reports of other injuries or damage from the crash, and the plane was not carrying any weapons or other munitions.
